It is a striking figure and it is real, but three caveats belong with it. It comes from a single small trial published in 1998. The curcumin dose was a supplement dose, not a culinary one. And 20 milligrams of piperine is far more pepper than anyone grinds over a latte.
The more interesting finding is the comparison. When several delivery formats were tested side by side in humans, colloidal and micellar preparations came out ahead of the piperine-based formulation on total curcuminoids. Pepper is not the ceiling. It is one route among several, and not the most efficient one.
None of this means you should leave the pepper out. If you are mixing turmeric coffee at home, a pinch costs nothing and adds a second pathway on top of the fat. Just do not treat it as the thing that makes or breaks the cup.
